What is a Radiation Protection Technician ?
It has been a French legal obligation since 1986, every company wishing to stock, use or handle ionising radiation sources must first appoint a Radiation Protection Technician (RPT). This is a legal obligation enshrined in the Labour Code. Since Decree No. 2018-437 of 4 June 2018 on the protection of workers from the risks due to ionizing radiation. For each establishment this legal obligation extends from Article R4451-112 jusqu’à l’article R4451-121 […]
After a specific training, renewed periodically, the RPT guarantees, under the responsibility of the employer, the safety of workers and the public exposed to ionising radiation.

Role & Missions
- The RPT acts under the responsibility of the employer. He is responsible for supervising the entire process involving a risk of exposure to ionising radiation. This starts from the creation of the application file for authorisation / declaration and will continue throughout the operations :
- Prior risk assessment for workers
- Work organisation
Internal and external radiation protection controls - Dosimetric monitoring in relation to the occupational health doctor
The RPT’s role is therefore to take all necessary precautions and measures to protect exposed personnel.
RPT duties
Even if he acts under the responsibility of the employer, the RPT still has its own obligations :
He must carry out his mission independently with the necessary tools.
An annual report must be submitted to the Social Economic Committee, or to the staff representatives.
If the exposure limit was to be exceeded, the RPT must, in conjunction with occupational medicine, carry out all the investigations and actions necessary to correct this excess.
Preliminary risk evaluation
Work organisation
Internal and external radiation protection controls
Dosimetric monitoring in relation to the occupational health doctor
RPT regional record and
